Hazardous Materials to Watch Out For

Calgary, AB, Canada

If you’ve chosen the right company to help, waste disposal can be pretty straightforward. However, that doesn’t mean safe practices shouldn’t be your top priority. You’ll inevitably come across materials that are considered hazardous, and these should be managed accordingly!

Hazardous Fluids & Fuels
Many things we all encounter or utilize in day-to-day life are not immediately hazardous to us, but nonetheless they require specific methods of disposal. Because of their acid content, many battery types are common examples. Automotive chemicals and fuels like gasoline, oil, coolant, or wiper fluid are also not standard disposal materials. The same goes for things like paint, paint thinner, varnish, and wood stain. Also keep an eye out for pool chemicals or pest control fluids, as well as medical waste and anything flammable or explosive such as fireworks.

Certain Containers
While you may be more focused on the chemicals and fluids themselves, the containers they’re carried in also need to be kept in mind. Just because a container of pesticide has been mostly used up, for instance, doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t pose a hazard. The same goes for any container that holds the fluids mentioned above. Propane tanks, aerosol cans that held paint or chemical material, and containers that held medical waste are important to take note of. They may need to be disposed of differently from other waste. In short, be as attentive of containers as you are of the things they’ve contained!

Asbestos and Others
In addition to materials that we have common use for, there are a few hazardous things we rarely encounter in daily life but might come across during a project. This is particularly true in older homes and buildings. Surfaces that have seen use of lead-based paint, for instance, are one of the most common causes of lead poisoning. Meanwhile, asbestos is one of the most hazardous materials to come in contact with, especially once it’s been broken apart in the demolition or renovation process. It’s important to be as educated as possible on the age of your home and the necessary safety precautions. When in doubt, the appropriate experts are readily available.
